Creswell pit disaster commemoration

A VILLAGE which lost relatives and friends during the Creswell Colliery disaster is to commemorate the tragedy’s 61st anniversary.

The disaster involved the deaths of 80 miners after an underground blaze erupted on a damaged conveyor belt in the early hours of September 26, 1950.

Rev Amanda Pike, of St Mary Magdalene Church, Creswell, said: “It’s important to commemorate what happened and it’s poignant because of the recent mining tragedy in Wales.”

A service is to be held at St Mary Magdalene Church, on Elmton Road, from 7pm, on Sunday, and Elmton-with-Creswell History Group is holding a display at a history fair at Creswell Crags, on Saturday, October 1.
