RURAL chiefs have welcomed the Government’s announcement of £300m new funding to build up to 15,000 affordable homes and bring 5,000 empty properties back into use.

The Countryside Alliance has long called for the building of more affordable housing so that local people and workers can afford to live in rural areas.

The announcement will boost the economy and benefit many rural communities where house prices are simply out of reach for many, said the pressure group.

Executive chairman Barney White-Spunner said: “There is a real need for more affordable housing in our countryside.”
