Council’s tribute to ‘dedicated’ public servant

Conservative Councillor Mike Longden, 74, served the council for Derwent Valley since 2009 and was a cabinet member for education for four years.

He lived in Baslow, and in addition to sitting on Derbyshire County Council, represented Chatsworth on Derbyshire Dales District Council since 2003. The trained accountant was a former MD of a manufacturing and distribution company,he was director of the Derbyshire Rural Communities Council and a trustee of Baslow Sports Field Trust.

Council leader Anne Western, Labour, said: “Mike was a dedicated and active councillor who worked hard for the people in his community.

“He was well-liked and respected by those who worked with him and the people he represented.

Conservative leader Barry Lewis, said: “Mike was perhaps the most dedicated councillor I have ever encountered, and a true example to us all.

“In every role he did for the council he excelled. Especially as Cabinet Member for Education between 2009 and 2013.

“His focus was always the children and ensuring they had the best education and facilities he could bring to bear.

“He was a true public servant, no issue was too trivial and every matter had his full attention. And right to the end, despite being ill, he was dealing with local matters.

“He was a true gentleman, a friend to many and always ready with warm words and a bright smile. He will be sorely missed by a great many.”

Liberal Democrat Keith Morgan said: “In my 10 years as a councillor with Derbyshire County Council he has taught me more than most, a friend who I will miss.”

Mike leaves his wife Chris and four children.
