Council refuses housing plans on design grounds

Residents opposed to a proposed housing development on a Matlock site have been ‘encouraged’ by its refusal by planners.

In a meeting of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s planning committee the proposed development on part of the car park of the Youth Hostel Association (YHA), in Dimple Road, was refused.

Grayden Daniels, whose home in Wyvern Close backs onto the YHA, said: “We were very encouraged. It was excellent.”

He said Matlock town councillor Sue Burfoot and her husband Martin both spoke well in opposition to the plans.

The applicant proposed building 11 three–bedroomed homes with associated car parking and gardens

A spokesman for Derbyshire Dales District Council said: “There were concerns too about the design and appearance of the proposed dwellings and the lack of affordable housing and play space provision.

“However, members stated they were open to consideration of a revised scheme for a less intensive form of development. The applicant has been advised of this.”
