Council honoured for backing business

Bolsover District Council has been short-listed by the Local Government Association as a finalist in the Economic Development category of the annual Local Government Awards 2012.

The Council is up against some of the biggest authorities and cities in the UK including Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham and Essex and the winner will be announced on March 14.

The Council’s application impressed the judging panel with examples of how it has supported business growth across the district through a number of innovative approaches, including enterprise coaching with the Great Big Enterprise Challenge and with the restoration of key gateway buildings in to business accommodation.

These examples showed how the council is working with the business community to understand their needs by being able to offer the right support to encourage their growth in a time when economic decline is biting hard throughout the country.

Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Alan Tomlinson said: “We are extremely proud to be in the mix with the big names in terms of regeneration and business and it highlights how much work and effort we have put in over the past three years.”

In the past year alone the Council has secured some major developments and big names such as the Co-op Distribution Centre, Tesco, and The Tangent and both at Brook Park Shirebrook, which will create more than 1,000 jobs.

“We pride ourselves on the help, support and assistance we give to businesses. By working with them and understanding and meeting their needs we believe this is the key to our success and highlights why Bolsover District really is the place to do business,” added Cllr Tomlinson.
