Derbyshire Dales District Council’s licensing and appeals sub committee approved the application by Bakewell Town Football Club to sell alcohol at the pavilion, in the Recreation Ground, on match days.

The club said it had applied for the licence in a bid to encourage members and opponents to socialise after games.

Speaking in a meeting this week, Martin Nobbs, chairman of the Bakewell Cricket Club, pointed out that the pavilion had been left to the cricket club by Stanley Orme.

“I would say the drink driving laws are the main reason why people don’t socialise after games,” he said. “Visiting teams can’t afford to stay behind and drink after games.”

Many residents objected to the application on the grounds that they felt it was likely to increase anti–social behaviour in the area.

The football club will now be permitted to sell alcohol between 5.30pm and 10pm Monday to Friday, and between noon and 10pm Saturday and Sunday. It will only be able to serve members of the club and people from opposing teams signed in by members.

Speaking after the meeting, club secretary Nick Rosling, said: “We are pleased with the outcome of the panel. We are going to ensure that we fulfil the conditions that were put on the licence.”
