Trading standards officers at Derbyshire County Council are backing a Government campaign to tackle rogue doorstep traders.
The Office of Fair Trading has today (July 19) launched its annual national Doorstep Selling Campaign.
It aims to make people aware of their rights if confronted by rogue traders and gives advice on how to deal with them.
The Office of Fair Trading offers ten top tips for doorstep buying:
1. Don’t sign on the spot
2. Check the trader’s identity
3. Be wary of special offers or warnings about your home
4. Always shop around for the best price
5. Read the small print
6. Double check the facts
7. Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion
8. Don’t hand over a cash deposit
9. Think carefully before agreeing to let a trader start work
10. Trust your instincts
Kevin Parkinson, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “The Office of Fair Trading’s tips might seem like common sense – but they could save people from making a costly mistake.
“No one should feel pressured into making a rash buying decision. If in doubt always think twice and get a second opinion.
“In Derbyshire our Trusted Trader scheme means there’s absolutely no reason for residents to employ a tradesman who calls at their door uninvited.
“With over 1,300 traders who are vetted by our trading standards officers before they are allowed to join the scheme, it offers a safe route to finding a trader who will do a reliable job at a fair price.”
