Could Chesterfield's old magistrates' court become this?

Chesterfield man Martin Rothery has launched an online bid to raise £150,000 to breathe new life into the prominent building, which is located between Rose Hill and West Bars.

He said: "I have a mission to save this old building and help the community at the same time. I plan to open an alternative health, fitness and youth centre."

The Grade II listed building has planning consent for it to be used for a range of purposes including office, retail and leisure facilities.

Designed by Professor Joseph Stanely Allen, a renowned achitect, planner and academic, the building was completed in 1956 and became Grade II listed in 1998.

It has stood empty for the last few years and become a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

Earlier this year, we revealed how costs associated with renovating the building are proving 'prohibitive' to potential buyers.

Stuart Waite, associate director at Innes England in Derby, who is handling lettings on behalf of a private client, said: "We've got close with a number of occupiers and are still actively marketing the building.

"However, the costs associated with any refurbishment have been largely prohibitive up to this point.

"There are funds available to invest should the right occupier come along and it makes economic sense," he added.
