Costa Coffee coming to Bakewell

Traders and residents in Bakewell have lost their battle to stop Costa Coffee opening an outlet in the town.

The initial planning application was rejected by the members of the Peak District National Park Authority in July amid concerns that the establishment would harm the town’s character and put jobs at risk

But an appeal was lodged by Costa immediately afterwards and the original decision has now been overturned.

Disgruntled residents, retailers and cafe owners have not given up just yet, though, and are meeting at the Thorntons store, Bakewell, on Friday, December 21 at 5.30pm, to formulate a plan of action.

Brian Hills, of Bakewell Antiques and Works of Art, said: “We have not given up hope and we will put together a petition and launch a full campaign to oppose Costa Coffee coming to town.”
