He was due to stay with close friend and co-founder of Wirksworth theatre company Men in Dressing Gowns Darren Langford, who had accompanied him to his Wirksworth home to pick up some items. Mr Smith left the house, claiming he needed to take a jacket back to a friend. When he did not return for an hour, Mr Langford called the police, who found his body in the quarry the following day.
Mr Newman said that while in hospital, Mr Smith had disclosed problems with his career, stress and his sexuality had caused him to self-harm.
“Trevor Smith died as a result of drowning,” he said.
Mr Newman returned a conclusion of suicide.
