Police are investigating a burglary at a Peak District church where silverware was stolen.
Burglars took silverware from St Martin’s Church, at The Nook, Stoney Middleton, between 8.30am, on Sunday, August 28, and 8.30am, on Sunday, September 4. Items including several chalices were stolen from a safe.
Officers are investigating whether the burglary is connected to a similar incident at St Peter’s Church, on Pindale Road, Hope. This church was broken into some time between 9am on Saturday, July 2 and 10am on Wednesday, July 27.
They took around 15 items from a safe, ranging in age from 1662 to the 1970. Items stolen include two silver chalices and a 17th century pewter collection plate.
People who live near churches are being urged to be vigilant and contact police if they see anyone acting suspiciously around the buildings.
