Contribute knitting and crochet to Chesterfield’s yarn bombing

Charlotte Bolton, a 20-year-old artist, is organising a yarn bombing display as part of the Market Festival next month.

She said: “Yarn Bombing is a form of street art where patches of knitting/crochet are tied onto natural everyday and manmade objects such as trees, bollards, poles, lamp-posts, park benches and fences. This is completely safe and not destructive in any way.

“I feel it’s a form of street art that would appeal to a huge variety of people.

Charlotte, who lives in Chesterfield, said: “I need as much knitting/crochet as possible in order for this event to happen. It needs to be enough to cover lamp posts, bollards and planks on benches for the outdoor market and for handrails inside the Market Hall.

“I need patches of knitting no bigger than six inches wide, but can be any length/shape/colour pattern.

“Individual patches will be sewn together to create a large piece that I can then wrap around the objects. I am going to sew the patches together and put everything up myself.

“Once the Market Festival is over and the Yarn Bombing is taken down, I will be using the knitting to create scarves and blankets to give to a homeless charity. Pathways is a charity in Chesterfield that offers support to the homeless and people at risk of becoming homeless; they also work closely with The Salvation Army and hopefully with enough knitting contribution, we can donate to both of these charities to help support homeless.”

She is appealing for people to drop off knitted or crocheted contributions at the Visitor Information Centre in Rykneld, Chesterfield, by the deadline of October 17.

The Market Festival runs from October 24 to November 1.
