PLANS to extract coal from a site the size of 40 football pitches near hundreds of homes are to be put to residents at a drop-in exhibition.

The company behind the proposals, Provectus, will host the two-day event on May 25 and 26, to keep residents informed of the plans for the site, to the west of the A61 north of Clay Cross.

The exhibitions will run from 10am to 7pm on both days, with the Friday event beind held at Clay Cross Social Centre, Market Street and the Saturday event at Holmgate Community Centre on Holmgate Road.

Concerned residents are also staging a meeting this Friday to raise awareness of the implications the project could have on the community. The meeting is open to the public, and will be held at Holmgate Community Centre, Valley Road, Holmgate from 7pm.
