Concern after Chesterfield club asks people if they can 'handle' super-strength alcohol

Concerns have been raised after a Chesterfield club asked people if they could 'handle' one of the strongest alcoholic drinks in the world.

On Saturday night, Aruba published a post on its Facebook page promoting 80 per cent Stroh rum.

The post originally stated: "80% PROOF. Need to forget your week at work? We have the answer." These words were later removed.

The post added: "Can you handle it? £5 per shot, one per person per night."

The Derbyshire Times has been contacted by some people who voiced concern about Corporation Street-based Aruba selling the drink and the language used to promote it in the post.

One person who got in touch said: "Do they not have some responsibility?"

Aruba has hit back, however.

One online review about Stroh says: "Love this stuff. It's lethal but does a job on the brain cells."

Another reads: "WARNING: THIS STUFF GETS YOU DRUNK. No, seriously, this stuff is very powerful, be careful with it. It will make your throat and stomach feel like they are on fire."

Violence and anti-social, uncivilised behaviour fuelled by alcohol is of big concern to many people in Chesterfield.

Much work is being done to continue to reduce it, including extra police patrols at weekends.

The town centre is also subject to Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) which, among other things, ban any activity or behaviour which causes nuisance, alarm, harassment or distress to another person.

The PSPOs also enable the police or other authorised enforcement officers to make anyone found drinking booze on the streets within the town centre to hand over open or unopened alcohol cans or bottles.

Anyone found to be in breach of the PSPOs could be issued with a fixed penalty notice and fined £100.
