COLUMN: A centre with a view thanks to your help

Over the last twelve months I've talked to many groups, schools, companies, coffee mornings and individuals about the NGS Macmillan Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Much of this has focussed on the patient benefits including having more localised care, treatment and care in one location. But one of the added benefits I’ve often mentioned is the view over the Derbyshire countryside that many cancer patients will have when undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

One of the reasons for choosing to have the centre at the back of the hospital was very much to take advantage of the view. Having only just been given permission to have a look inside – it’s just so great to start to see words turn into a reality.

None of this would have been possible without the amazing support of the local community, we do still need your support to raise £2.5 million towards the cost of the new centre.

We’ve been supported in many varied and fantastic ways. Here’s some of the many different ways: Fischer’s at Baslow are asking their guests to make a voluntary contribution of £5 – or any amount they choose – when paying their bill, and have already raised over £4,400.

A number of very generous supporters have asked for donations in lieu of special occasions like golden wedding anniversaries or landmark birthdays. BRM Solicitors is once again running a free will writing month in aid of the appeal this month and in October and local school St Peter and St Pauls Independent School ran a Biz Kidz Project which raised more than £3,300 for the appeal utilising the kids entrepreneurial skills – as they created and sold their own recipe book, ran an art auction and made up packs of goodies they got donated for babies and toddlers.
