College principal to retire this year

Trevor Clay, 57, will leave his role as principal at the end of this academic year after more than 14 years at the college.

Mr Clay, who became head in July 2012 following the mysterious suspension of former chief Judith McArthur, has worked in further and higher education for a total of 27 years.

During his time as principal, the college has helped more than 4,500 students find apprenticeships. Mr Clay also oversaw nearly 50 job cuts.

The dad-of-two, of Hucknall, said: “It’s been a difficult decision to retire and one that has not been taken lightly.

“You never have to ask yourself why you work in a college as the education and training we provide is absolutely essential to individuals and businesses alike.

“However, I have that increasingly rare opportunity to retire before my state pension age and to be able to commit more of my time to other organisations and activities with which I am involved.”

He added: “I will certainly miss Chesterfield – it’s a great town.

“I wish everyone connected with the college and the town well.”

Frank Smith, chair of Chesterfield College Corporation, said: “Trevor has made a huge contribution to the development of the college and established the foundations we need to achieve our ultimate goal of being outstanding.

“I would like to wish him and his wife Marcia a very happy and lengthy retirement.”

Mr Smith added the a recruitment drive to find a new principal will start immediately.
