A CLUB that has provided a meeting place for women for over 78 years has finally closed.
Chesterfield Churches Together’s Women’s Luncheon Club was founded in 1954 by George Percival at the Woodheads Cafe in Burlington Street.
The club has been held in several venues including the Winding Wheel theatre, the Grosvenor Rooms for 20 years and finally the Olde House in Newbold.
At the last meeting, president Pat Groom welcomed speaker Rev Andrew Checkly who spoke about how lives have changed over the past 78 years.
Rev Clark then gave members a ‘light stick’ as a memento of the group.
Secretary Margaret Openshaw said: “It is sad we have had to close as, in many case, members are getting older and the younger ladies go to work.”
