The historic building, where Derbyshire County Council operate from, was hit by raging flood waters on Friday, April 5, after a water main burst on Wellington Street.

While much of the building escaped the waters, many rooms have been damaged by the incident. The authority has lost 34 computers and the network in one part of the building.

However, a spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council told the Mercury that the clean up operation is going well so far.

“We’ve had to move around 60 members of staff who worked in the Winter Gardens. They are temporarily in one of the committee rooms – where we’ve set up computers and phones for them to use,” the spokesperson said.

“We won’t be able to assess the full extent or cost of the damage until everywhere has dried out. We will then be negotiating with Severn Trent and their insurers,” they added.
