Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard today, Monday, May 20, how Darren Nicholls, 19, of Broadgorse Close, Chesterfield, was spotted jumping over a church wall by an officer before the teenager became abusive.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Mahon said: “An officer was carrying out a search for a missing person and the missing person was seen trying to climb a wall into a church yard with this defendant.

“They were both detained and Nicholls was pacing around with clenched fists and shouting and swearing at the officer and there were pedestrians nearby.”

Miss Mahon added that Nicholls was ordered to leave the area and walk away but he continued abusing the officer and despite several warnings he was arrested and taken to the police station.

Nicholls pleaded guilty to causing threatening behaviour after the incident on May 1.

He told the court: “I’d had a few drinks that day and my behaviour was disgraceful and I’m sorry for what I’ve done.”

Magistrate Ms Boyle commended Nichols for showing remorse and he was fined £37 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
