Chesterfield striker Ched Evans tells jurors: 'I wouldn't hurt a girl'

During the footballer’s trial at Cardiff Crown Court, Evans, 27, who is accused of rape, denied that he felt ‘entitled’ to have sex with his alleged victim.

He is accused of raping a woman in a Premier Inn near Rhyl, North Wales, on a night out in May 2011.

The prosecution case against him is that his alleged victim, who was 19, was too drunk to consent to sex, but Evans insists it was consensual.

Evans is accused of raping a woman that fellow footballer, Clayton McDonald, took to his hotel room.

Prosecutor Simon Medland QC suggested Evans felt ‘entitled’ to sex.

“I am going to suggest that you felt in some way entitled to behave in that way?,” said the prosecutor.

Evans, who played for Sheffield United at the time, replied: “I would never treat a girl like that.”

Jurors were told that when interviewed by detectives, Evans said: “Footballers are rich, they’ve got money, that’s what girls like.”

The prosecutor said: “You felt at the time that football was a magnet for girls, didn’t you?”

In response, Evans said: “Looking back on that statement, it’s cringe worthy. I don’t think footballers are entitled to anything.”

It was suggested that Evan ‘didn’t care’ whether the woman in the hotel room wanted sex or not.

Mr Evans denied the accusation, replying: “I wouldn’t have sex with someone who wasn’t consenting.

“I wouldn’t hurt a girl”.
