CHESTERFIELD: Rotary Club welcomes Stuart Ripley as new member

President Mike Cudzich-Madry presided at the monthly business meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday, July 5. He welcomed regular guest Frank Clifford, a past president of the Rotary Club of Bolsover, who brought greetings from their new president Pamela Cox.

The president reminded members of the opportunity to volunteer for duty at the Ashover Charity Classic Car & Bike Show, which was being organised jointly by the Rotary Clubs of Chesterfield, Chesterfield Scarsdale, Clay Cross and Matlock. The event is being held on Sunday, July 28 from 10am to 4pm.

The members endorsed a proposal to continue sponsorship of two citizenship awards at Netherthorpe School, namely the GCSE Prize Award and the Good Work in the Community Award.

Past president John Keeton reported that the club had been ‘mentioned in despatches’ at the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon by Dr Harminder Singh Dua, an ophthalmologist who is Chair and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Nottingham, Queen’s Medical Centre. He is renowned as a world authority on corneal disorders and performs advanced surgeries and when receiving the 2012/13 Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award he kindly recalled the welcome donation made to his research by the Rotary Club of Chesterfield.

Members endorsed the proposal to enhance digital communications with the setting up of Facebook and Twitter accounts in addition to the club’s existing website

President-elect Rob Wadd introduced new recruit Stuart Ripley, a retired civil engineer, who he was sponsoring for membership. The president then conducted the official induction ceremony and welcomed the new Rotarian into membership, not only of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield, but also into the greater fellowship of Rotary throughout the world.

Past president John Keeton proposed the closing toast.

At the next meeting tomorrow (Friday) the guest speaker is Nicole Huthwaite on ‘Hypnotherapy’. The speaker host is George Freeman and duty Rotarian is Ian Gaunt.
