President Jim Haggarty presided at the monthly business meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield held at the Olde House, Newbold, on Friday, March 8. He welcomed Bolsover past president Frank Clifford, and Stuart Whitby, guest of rotarian Robb Wadd.
The president announced that the date for the club’s AGM would be Friday, May 17, when members will be asked to agree the budgets for Rotary Year 2013-14, and elect six members of the Club Council. He also reported that there was currently a vacancy for the post of junior vice-president for 2013-14.
Hon Sec John Hare reported that Rotary District Governor, Dave Ashley, has planned a sponsored walk from Bluebell Wood Childrens Hospice at Dinnington to Rainbows Children’s Hospice at Loughborough, a total of 65 miles, which would be staged over the four days of Friday, May 3 to Monday, May 6. Funds raised will be for the two hospices and anyone who wishes to join in, either for the whole event, or en route, should contact Dave Ashley. There is also a sponsored cycle ride on Monday, May 6.
Rotarian Ian Gordon, reported on another successfully run public speaking competition held on Tuesday, March 5, by Brockwell Junior School where the judges had been president Jim Haggarty, Chesterfield Inner Wheel Club president Adrienne Handley and Ian Gordon from the club’s vocational group. All the 12 entrants had received a certificate and the winners were presented with a cup.
Past president Bryan White, reminded members that the finals of the annual Chesterfield Schools Public Speaking Competition would be held at the club meeting on Friday, March 22, when members’ wives and the ladies of Chesterfield Inner Wheel were invited to attend.
The closing toast was proposed by past president David Jenkins.
At the next meeting tomorrow (Friday) the guest speaker is Immediate Past District Governor Gordon McGlone talking about ‘Aquabox the new Gold Standard’. The speaker host is David Longden and duty rotarian is John Keeton.
