Chesterfield pupils write letters urging residents and firms to reduce their plastic use

Around 65 youngsters at Old Hall Junior School in Brampton penned letters raising awareness about the 'devastating' impacts of plastic on oceans and animals.

The letters advise companies and residents to make small changes - like using paper, metal or reusable straws - to make a big difference.

Lauren Thomas, year six teacher at the school, said: "The impact it has had on the children has been fantastic and the passion and enthusiasm they have shown to try to effect the world in which they live has been amazing to witness.

"We knew they had taken it to their heart when, on the first day of the topic, one girl spent her lunchtime in the library trying to find a phone number for Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins to tell him what she thought.

"As well as trying to make a positive difference, pupils have improved their writing skills and their geographical skills.

"Staff think it is really important that they become actively involved in this issue as climate change is something which may define their generation.

"Although the pupils did not ask specifically for replies, some businesses have already written back and the children love reading the letters.

"As their teachers, we are immensely proud of them.

"They put their heart and soul into this topic and we could not have asked for more."
