Chesterfield primary school head teacher to sky dive from 12,000ft

A daredevil Chesterfield primary school headteacher is to skydive from 12,000ft to raise funds so a number of small community '˜pop-up' libraries can be installed in the area.

Hady Primary School headteacher Susan Chapman wants to encourage pupils at the school and the wider community to ‘love’ reading and believes setting up at least three, free mini libraries will give people the chance to access books more easily.

Mrs Chapman got the idea from a project called Little Free Library – which is proving popular in America – and she wants Hady to take the lead in promoting it in the UK.

“I would like to install several little free libraries at and around school for use by the community at Hady,” Mrs Chapman said.

“I want to be able to cover the full gamut of reading abilities, so we will have a library for nursery readers, Key Stage 1 readers, upper and lower Key Stage 2 readers, teens and adults.”

The small, weatherproof boxes would be filled with books and would be stationed in a neighbourhood, ideally in a location where people often pass through. Anyone from the local area would be welcome to select and leave a book. No registration would be needed and the books would be free.

Posting on her fundraising page, one person said: “Good luck Mrs Chapman! You are very brave. Looking forward to enjoying the book boxes.”
