Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has apologised for using “unwise language” in a tweet about the Tories.

On Sunday, Conservative party activist Tim Montgomerie tweeted: “If Jeremy Corbyn’s landslide win isn’t enough for Labour moderates to quit/defect I genuinely wonder what it would take?”

Mr Perkins replied: “You Tories never understand how much we hate you. Many Labour MPs motivated to get into politics to stop you.”

That comment sparked a flurry of condemnation on the social networking site.

@TimSwinyard said: “You’re an MP. Surely by now you’ve learned to think before you tweet? It’s very sad that you’re so consumed with hatred.”

@MartinTheSpur commented: “How utterly childish and pathetic your tweet is.”

@Jamse83089 said: “Just remember every politician, whatever their ideology, is doing their duty for the people. Please respect each other.”

Mr Perkins later tweeted: “Maybe ‘hate’ tweet not my finest moment... unwise language. Sorry for any offence.”

He clarified that he “hates the Tory party and the idea of joining it, not all the people in it”.
