A Chesterfield man who suffered a brain injury in 2001 which left him unable to speak or move has recently become the proud owner of two Guinness World Record titles.
Marti Powell, 35, now holds the record for the fastest five metres and the furthest distance travelled by a rubber band car - with both world bests being set at Queen’s Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield within the last 12 months.
Marti had an accident in 2001 which left him needing constant support but, after years of rehabilitation, he has regained much of his independence and is now able to live on his own in the community.
He said: “If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything – I’m the best in the world!”
As well as being a double record-breaker, Marti is also a keen student, gaining his BSc in computing in 2009.
Jane Bond of case management firm, Community Rehabilitation Management, said: “Marti’s achievement is fantastic, we are proud of his determination to accomplish what he set out to do.”
