He was instantly smitten with Cynthia- so much so he wasn’t taking any chances and pocketed her bracelet so he could give it her back at their next date.

Cynthia said: “It was one of those wide brass bracelets girls wore at the time, thinking they were posh.

“He said- that’s a nice bracelet, mind if I have a look at it?

“Then he put it in his pocket and said he’s give it me back next time. He wanted to make sure I turned up. Well, it worked.”

Around 12 months later they were married at Staveley Church and went on to have two daughters, Hayley and Rebecca.

The Longsons are now enjoying being grandparents to Christian, Julian and Lillian.

Asked what the secret is to a happy marriage, Cynthia joked: “Tolerance.

“Ron was also a long distance HGV driver, so he was away quite a bit and I think that gave us the chance to miss each other.”
