Chesterfield children's charity at centre of TV investigation

The fundraising tactics of Chesterfield-based charity Kids '˜N' Cancer have been at the centre of a TV investigation following the arrest of one of its trustees.

Well-known Chesterfield businessman, Mike Hyman, 69, co-founded the charity - based at The Bridge Business Centre on Beresford Way - in 2010.

Last month, Mr Hyman and his wife June, 71, were arrested on suspicion of theft and have been bailed until autumn.

Now a new investigation carried out by BBC Inside Out has looked deeper into the charity’s finances and included interviews with Mr Hyman’s estranged son Chris and a former bookkeeper.

Mr Hyman was not interviewed on the show, with his solicitors telling the programme-makers that ‘in light of the ongoing investigation our client does not feel it is appropriate to take part in your programme’.

Mr Hyman ‘denies any wrongdoing’ and said he will be able to answer any questions once the investigation is concluded.

Earlier this month it emerged that entries to the Chesterfield Half Marathon - which the charity organises and is scheduled to take place on October 22 - had been suspended.

The charity’s accounts have also been frozen by the Charity Commission, which revealed it had ‘opened a statutory inquiry into the charity to assess serious concerns about its management and governance’ after the arrests.
