CHESTERFIELD: Busy time for members of ME group

Chesterfield members of the Sheffield ME Group (SMEG) have been having a busy summer.

On Thursday, June 27, there was an enjoyable ‘summer gathering’ at Frederick’s Cafe, Queen’s Park. The group was pleased to welcome three visitors as well as existing members to this informal meeting and to have the opportunity to share and exchange information and experiences associated with this chronic illness.

Sheffield M.E. Group held a two-day event in Chesterfield Precinct on Thursday and Friday, July 4 and 5, to promote awareness and understanding of ‘Living with an Invisible Illnesses’. There were representatives from Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Tinnitus, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s support groups as well as SMEG. Chris Wintle who organised this event had the aim of helping people understand that a person can look perfectly fit and well yet be suffering from a serious chronic illness. The event proved to be a great success and Chris plans to hold another similar event later this year.

The last seated Tai Chi class finished Wednesday, July 17. Participating members found this gentle exercise and relaxation therapy helpful in alleviating some of their ME/CFS symptoms and another course is being planned for autumn 2013.

A lunchtime Network Meeting, Wednesday, July 24, was held at Nona’s Coffee Shop, beside the Chesterfield Canal at Hollingwood Hub where members had the chance to chat and discuss issues involved in day to day living with an ongoing illness in a picturesque, relaxing environment and enjoy delicious homemade food.

The SMEG Information stand at the Medieval Market last Tuesday, July 30, attracted a lot of visitors including local MP Toby Perkins who showed interest in the group and the work carried out to help people affected by ME/CFS in the Chesterfield area.

If you would like to find out more visit the SMEG Promotion and Awareness Stand at the Party in the Park, Queen’s Park, on Friday, August 9.
