CHESTERFIELD: British Legion branch helpers raise £35,000 through Poppy Appeal

At the January meeting of the Chesterfield branch of the Royal British Legion, chairman Fred Deveraux and Peter Fairey conducted a short business meeting and Molly Carter outlined forthcoming trips and speakers. This was followed by Jack Carter who did one of his famous quizzes, the prize in which was won by Margaret Eldridge.

On March 14, His Worship the Mayor, will host a presentation in the Mayors Parlour to cadets and others who gave their time to help during the Poppy Appeal period. The RAF Cadets, Army Cadets and the Sea Cadets collected on the streets of Chesterfield. Other helpers stood in local supermarkets and helped Roy Backhouse, Poppy Appeal Organiser, with general administration duties. The sum of £35,000 has been raised by the Chesterfield Branch so far. The fund is open to the end of September.

The next meeting of the Royal British Legion, Chesterfield branch, is on Thursday, February 28, 7.30pm, at Haig House, Glumangate, Chesterfield. The office is open Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 12noon on 232591.
