CHESTERFIELD: Baby boom for degu pair at RSPCA

Thirteen might be unlucky for some, but it was the lucky number for a pair of female degus, who birthed 13 babies between them.

The creatures were brought to the RSPCA animal centre on Spital Hill last month, and staff were amazed to discover they were both pregnant.

“They were abandoned in a box on a back street with a group of males. When they arrived, it wasn’t long before they both had their babies” said Gary Taylor, animal care manager at the centre.

The first degu gave birth to four babies on March 25 – two of which have already been rehomed – followed by her companion who had nine on April 14.

Two babies are ready for adoption, but the other nine will not be ready until May 14.

Gary added: “They are very friendly animals and are very very inqusitive. Degus are actually closely related to the guinea pig.

He said that anyone wishing to rehome a degu must adopt them in pairs or small groups, and have a cage with different levels for them to play in.
