This exciting development has been made possible by a grant of just over £330,000 from NHS North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The extra funding will also help provide increased support to vulnerable patients being cared for in their own homes via Ashgate Hospice At Home and occupational therapy services.

The additional funding is for one year only and is specifically for these extra beds and services which will allow the hospice to temporarily increase the number of patients and families they are able to provide valuable care for.

This is an exciting development at Ashgate Hospice as, despite having room for 21 beds since their extension was built in 2005, they have only ever been able to fund 17 of them due to lack of funding.

Jackie Pendleton, Chief Officer of NHS North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we have made this extra funding available to improve the quality of care for vulnerable patients and their families. Ashgate Hospice provides an important role in caring for our patients and as a health community we greatly appreciate the excellent care that they deliver.”

Andy Gregory, Chief Officer of NHS Hardwick Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “This funding will go a long way to making a real difference to people in need of end of life care.

“Ashgate Hospice has an excellent record of providing the highest quality of care and we are delighted that more patients and their families will receive the invaluable support that the Hospice continues to deliver.”

The Hospice’s Head of Fundraising and Communications, Joanne Edwards, said: “We are extremely grateful to the CCG for making this money available which will allow us to make a real difference to even more local people in need of palliative care.

“However, I must stress to our wonderful supporters that fundraising for existing services needs to remain a key priority as we still need to raise £3 Million this year.”

The new beds and services should be operational during April for one year.
