Cheese gurus revive a proud tradition


A FAMOUS family business has teamed up with other entrepreneurs to bring back a cheese-making creamery to the region.

Simon Davidson, of the Cheese Factor, in the Market Hall, Chesterfield, joined four other experts who have successfully launched Hartington Creamery after the former Hartington Dairy shut down three years ago after a long history going back to the 1870s.

Mr Davidson, whose own business has been running over 60 years, said: “Hartington Creamery has risen from the ashes this year and it is now looking forward to a busy festive season. We’re passionate about cheese making and reinstating cheese production in Hartington as there have been no cheese factories operating in the county since the closure of the Hartington Dairy in May, 2009.”

The Hartington Dairy was first established by the Duke of Devonshire in the 1870s until it was destroyed by a fire in 1894 but it was reinstated by Thomas Nuttall in 1900 who began producing renowned Blue Stilton from the factory.

Hartington Creamery includes Mr Davidson and renowned cheese makers Adrian Cartlidge and Alan Salt and owners of the Hartington Cheese Shop Gary and Claire Millner.
