Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall open up for festive season

The festive season is well and truly upon us and lots of stately homes and venues are gearing up to welcome you in out of the cold to see them transformed by Christmas decorations and special events.

Haddon Hall’s festivities started on November 14 and continue to December 15, and are this year based on the theme of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

There will be swans a swimming in the River Wye as well as pipers piping and ladies dancing in the courtyard.

The month sees a host of activities take place from decoration workshops to choirs and the rooms will, of course, be decorated in the traditional opulent style.

Christmas at Chatsworth got underway early in November when the halls were ‘decked’ and continues right through to January 3.

The stately home will be hosting Christmas pie and pea suppers, a Christmas market from November 12 to 29 and festive feasts on dates in November and December.

There will also be gourmet evenings, Christmas wreath making on December 2 and 3, evening nativities in the farmyard and Masquerade Balls.

The owners of Hardwick Hall’s describe a visit there as the ‘perfect gift’ this Christmas.

They will be running Christmas events on 16 days throughout November and December where you can discover the hall and gardens, enjoy the festive decorations and a festive trail round the house and get hands on with the crafts on offer.

There will also be a Christmas tree sale in the Stableyard from November 28.

Alexandra Sitwell will also be opening up Renishaw Hall in Derbyshire to visitors this December.

The Hall will be open for public tours on December 9, 12, 13 and 16 and group tours of the hall will also be available every day between December 9 and 16, with pre-booking essential for both.

Tissington Hall will be running special Charles Dickens themed events this Christmas from November 16 to December 6.

The Hall will also be open on three weekends in November and December so the public can see the Dickensian rooms in the seventeenth century mansion.

Gulliver’s World in Matlock Bath will also be running special Christmas events from December 5 to 23.

The theme park will transport you into a ‘winter wonderland’ with Christmas rides, shows and attractions including the popular Elf School where you can get the chance to become an honorary elf or come and visit Mrs Christmas’ Kitchen for the chance to cook up some delicious treats.

Bolsover Castle will be hosting a ghost tour on Saturday 28 November where the brave can hear tales of dark deeds, ghostly apparitions and scary happenings (over 16s only).

Revolution House in Old Whittington is currently closed but will reopen for Christmas from December 17 to 24 and December 28 to 31.

Poole’s Cavern in Buxton is open all year round except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.
