Car body parts and animal skull among rubbish cleared at Derbyshire reservoir

A large number of discarded car body parts, an animal skull and two gas cylinder bottles were among the many items of rubbish collected by the Friends of Cromford Canal at Codnor Reservoir.

Ten volunteers took part in the little pick, braving horrendous weather conditions to collect 54 bags of rubbish - including many plastic bottles.

The group worked on the section from the car park westward, along the abandoned section adjacent to Coach Road and up to the metal walkway that crosses the reservoir feeder.

A spokesman said: “One observation concerning the plastic litter, which several people remarked on, was bio-degradable plastics and things such as coffee cup plastic lids, when gripped by the litter pickers, just broke up into a lot smaller pieces, causing more work and concern about their effect on the location.

“It was also very evident that a lot of this rubbish had been there a considerable time.”

In total, more than 53 hours were spent collecting the rubbish.
