Calls made to help keep Chesterfield cycle path clean after glass bottles and rubbish dumped

A Chesterfield woman is calling for a cycle track in the town to be cleared up of broken glass and dumped rubbish before someone gets hurt.

June Lane, 68, of Holme Road, says the cycle track close to the Casa Hotel has become an ‘eyesore’ and is only getting worse.

People are going to get punctures and I know of two people who have had to take their dogs to the vets for stitches because they have walked on the glass,” June said.

“It is a shame because it is a beautiful area.”

In response, Councillor Chris Ludlow, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “We do regularly clean this area but cannot be there all the time so we do rely on users acting responsibly and disposing of litter properly. As soon as we received a report that there was smashed glass and a lot of rubbish strewn over the path we went out and cleared it up.

“There are bins already at both ends of the path which mean that people only have to carry rubbish a short distance before they are able to dispose of it but unfortunately some people are not prepared to do this and instead throw it on the floor expecting others to pick it up for them.

“We would urge all users of the path to dispose of litter in the bins provided and think of other people who use the path.”
