Four North Derbyshire businesses have been named in a list of the region’s top manufacturers in an influential industry report.

Top spot in the Sheffield City Region list went to Barlborough-based food manufacturer Greencore UK for the second year running.

And Barlborough engineers Vesuvius, Holmeswood’s insulation experts Xtratherm UK Limited and Chesterfield pharmaceutical firm Mallinckrodt Chemical Limited are all placed in the top 35.

Ivan Fomin, managing director of MSE Hiller and Destination Chesterfield board member responsible for manufacturing and engineering, said: “Chesterfield has a thriving manufacturing sector which has survived for generations and is an important part of the town’s future.

“Manufacturing is the lifeblood of the economy, feeding other sectors such as retail and leisure and its continuing success relies on today’s students considering it for a future career.

“Made in Chesterfield is designed to open their eyes to this and show them the varied job roles available and also how the sector has changed.

“The support of companies in the sector is vital to the success of Made in Chesterfield.

Chesterfield is seen as an ideal location for manufacturing businesses due to its proximity to the M1 and Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby.

Manufacturing represents around 20 per cent of the turnover of Sheffield City Region, almost double the national average.
