Bid to change a street’s fate

NIGHTCLUB owners, taxi drivers and restaurateurs are amongst the people getting together to transform the future of a town centre street.

Businesses on Corporation Street, Chesterfield have launched The Corporation Street Group to help promote the leisure facilities on offer, by boosting the street’s profile as a town centre destination.

Chesterfield FC footballer, Aaron Downes cut the ribbon at a special launch event sponsored by Kick Energy Drink (Global Brands).

Jason Hill, group member and owner of several bars on Corporation Street, said: “Our mission is to create a unified, good-practice policy to develop a sustainable quality leisure area supporting the theatre.

“The street, was a run down part of Chesterfield, mainly due to the closure of the street with the creation of the A619 bypass which destroyed the retail businesses during the 70s and 80s.

“We have recently joined the Chesterfield Champions, and look forward to our input into the general redevelopment and regeneration of Chesterfield as a whole.”

The street, which forms part of the pedestrianised entrance to Chesterfield from the train station, could become an official gateway to the town.

A web portal has been set up offering visitors a chance to access all of the websites of participating businesses, and access to a group discount card.
