The Burnt Pig Ale ‘Ouse, which aims to complement Ilkeston’s real ale scene, will open on Market Street on May 28.

Owner Simon Clarke also runs sandwich shop Truly Scrumptious, a family business since 1986.

He originally bought the pub building with a view to converting it to living accommodation but that proved to be harder than he had anticipated. He said: “Real ale is something that interested me so I thought I’d have a go. The name came about from a drunken night out when a group of us were thinking of names - people remember it.”

The micro-pub -so called because of its size - will serve five real ales at any one time from local breweries. These will be changed on a regular basis and they will also serve local ciders. Simon is keen to support the local economy in this way.

In the future he hopes to have an on-site brewery.

The pub was given approval for a premises licence by Erewash Borough Council earlier this year. Objections were made by some residents who live nearby.

Simon said: “People who drink in real ale pubs aren’t the kind who stop out until 3am.”

The Burnt Pig will be open Thursdays to Sundays. The opening night will be held from 6pm on May 28.
