Bumps in the night recorded in book

Paranormal incidents in Chesterfield and north east Derbyshire have been recorded in a new book.

Strange North-East Derbyshire, by William Eyre, is part of a larger project by the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena to document unexplained strange goings-on.

It recounts various creepy tales from around the area over the years but one in particular concerns a house known as Rose Hill, which stood on the site of what is now Chesterfield Town Hall.

Author William Eyre said: “Back in the 1830s, the house experienced repeated ringing of the servants’ hall bells even when no-one was pulling any of the associated bell pulls, together with the sound of strange noises.

“But such weird incidents were not, of course, confined to the 19th century. As recently as the 1990s, there were numerous sightings of outdoor apparitions by different residents of one particular road in Clowne.

“Apparitions sighted included a woman walking through the door of a neighbouring house and a lady appearing part way down the road.”
