Budding entrepreneurs pitch up at Chesterfield market

Creative pupils from schools across north Derbyshire wowed shoppers with their own products and services at Chesterfield market, as part of the annual trade fair.

Thirteen teams of students aged between 14 and 17, descended on the market on Thursday, February 25, from 9am to 5pm, to showcase a variety of goods, most of which they designed themselves.

The popular trade fair is co-ordinated by the north Derbyshire branch of the enterprise education charity, Young Enterprise - which aims to equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise.

“The scheme is designed to give students an insight into business and to inspire them to ‘learn by doing’, said Hazel James, vice chair of the Young Enterprise’s north Derbyshire area board.

Schools which took part included: Lady Manners School, Bakewell; Tupton Hall; Chesterfield College; Dronfield Henry Fanshaw; Brookfield Community School; Parkside Community School; St Mary’s; Eckington School and Mount St Mary’s.

Judges on the day, Laura Jo Owen of Adorn Jewellers, Chesterfield, Ian Osborn of Banner Jones Solicitors, Chesterfield, and the Mayor of Chesterfield, Councillor Barry Bingham and his wife Mayoress June Bingham. visited each of the stalls to decide the Best Trade Stand - which was ‘Revamped Vinyl’ from Brookfield School.

Miss Owen said: “Brookfield’s stand was the most impressive. It was visually very striking.

“They were the only stand to make two consecutive sales whilst we were there and the presentation was slick and well shared.

“Overall it went really well. There was a lot of innovative products and confidence from the presentations.”

The area final of the competition will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at the Winding Wheel pub in Chesterfield.
