Brimington and Tapton Local History Group will be hearing more about Fred Wood’s old Staveley at their meeting this Thursday, October 24. The meeting, in Brimington Church Hall, starts at 7.30pm with all welcome. Philip Cousins will be presenting the slides compiled by Fred, which give a glimpse of yesteryear Staveley, starting in the town centre.
September’s meeting was presented by Sonia Preece who gave an account of life upstairs and downstairs at Hardwick, particularly in Bess’s time.
Sonia brought along some garments that would have been worn at the time.
At the meeting it was reported that the collection raised at Walter Turton’s recent funeral was to be given to the local history group. Walter was a regular attendee at meetings and walks. He had contributed his memories on Tapton City (where he had been born) to the group’s journal Brimington and Tapton Miscellany. Members expressed sadness at Walter’s death and their appreciation at this gift. The committee are to consider ways in which it might be used. A suitable piece will appear in the next Miscellany to mark this and show appreciation for the gift.
