Bravery awards for good samaritans who helped Alfreton stabbing victim

Four members of the public who stepped in to help a woman who had been stabbed in Alfreton have been commended for their bravery.

Angela Burks was attacked outside her home on Grange Street in February, suffering 13 stab wounds to her face and neck.

Ian Priest, Marika Simmons, Michael Doroshenko and Corina Iordache found Mrs Burks in the street, administered first aid and stayed with her until the emergency services arrived. They were given commendations for their bravery at a special ceremony held at Chesterfield police station last week.

In April, 39-year-old Lee Greenall, of Somercotes, was handed a minimum 10-year jail term for the attack on Mrs Burks.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Mrs Burks had been returning home from Tesco in Alfreton on the day of the attack. She was just yards from her front door when Greenall stepped out and asked her to hand over her handbag.

She initially refused and a struggle ensued with Mrs Burks later saying she felt blows raining down on her. She did not know she had been stabbed and eventually relented to let him have the bag but he continued to attack her. Greenall eventually fled and Mrs Burks was taken to hospital, where she remained for three days. Her bag was found in a bin on the same street eight days after the attack. All that was missing was £50 cash.

The knife was also eventually located and still contained Mrs Burks’ blood on the blade as well as Greenall’s DNA on the handle.

He admitted robbery, wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article.

In mitigation, the court heard Greenall had been the sole carer for his grandmother, who had died last year, which led to him turning to alcohol and amphetamine.
