Belper man dies while in police custody in Chesterfield

A man has died while in police custody, Derbyshire Constabulary has revealed.

The man, from Belper, had been arrested on Friday afternoon and detained in cells at Chesterfield police station.

He was found collapsed in his cell at 7.10pm that day.

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman said: “Police officers and paramedics attempted to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

“The coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination is being carried out to determine the cause of the man’s death.

“The death has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”
