Baslow WI members welcomed speaker Malcolm Dungworth, whose subject was Build Your Own Village Hall. Using an old 1940s black and white film, Malcolm showed the huge emphasis on self-help after the Second World War which encouraged village projects and tapped into mass employment, community spirit and lack of facilities.
There was majority support for action on the National Federation of Women’s Institute resolution regarding the decline of town centres.
Members had a trip to the Assay Office in Sheffield where, for a modest fee, goods can be checked out. During testing time, an elaborate gold necklace was found to be plated and not solid gold.
The WI served tea at the Baslow Sports Fest which was blessed by sunshine.
A talk by Peter Brown entitled San Diego to Sea of Cortez will be given on June 12 at 2pm, in Baslow Village Hall.
There will be sewing and a natter at the WISA meeting, led by Christine Thompson, on June 26 from 2pm to 4pm.
Other events includethe ACWW walk on June 28, meeting at 10.30am at Boots, Bakewell, and including lunch at Hassop bookstore; soup and pudding meal on July 8, at 12.30pm in Baslow village hall which will raise money for Edale Mountain Rescue; tickets £6.
