Banned driver caught behind the wheel is spared from jail

A banned driver has narrowly been spared from jail after he was caught behind the wheel of a car by police.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Friday, May 13, how Kevin Conway, 25, of Ann Street, Creswell, was stopped by police in a van on Baker Street, Creswell, without a licence.

Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam told a previous hearing that the defendant had no licence and was stopped and a check was made and it was clear Conway had been disqualified from driving and had no insurance.

The court heard how Conway had been convicted of dangerous driving in 2014 and other motoring offences and he had been disqualified.

Conway pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and to driving without insurance after he was stopped on January 19.

He also pleaded guilty to an offence of failing to stop after a separate incident in April.

However, magistrates sentenced Conway to 18 weeks of custody suspended for 12 months with a 12 week curfew.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years and his licence was endorsed with six points.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
