One of the 19-year-olds also had a suspected fractured leg, and a third man who tried to help them at the scene near Monyash, near Bakewell, had become stranded with hypothermia.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 1.45am on Thursday to help.

The team of volunteers set up a rope rescue system ready to lift the stretchers back up to the top of Lathkill Dale.

The injured casualties were secured into specialist body splints and to rescue stretchers for the difficult extraction, which took over two hours in darkness and heavy rain.

Both casualties were then taken to hospital in Sheffield and Chesterfield.

Crews from East Midlands Ambulance Service were also at the scene with a specialist hazardous access response team.

A Buxton Rescue Team spokesman said the incident was a ‘fine example of the emergency services working together in difficult circumstances’ with other organisations.
