Bakewell optometrist nominated for national award

Kathryn Heath, of Kathryn Heath Optometrist in Bakewell, is in the running for the Optometrist of the Year award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence.

The nomination recognises her exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration.

Age–related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages.

She said: “I was surprised and delighted to hear of my nomination. It is something which I find humbling and gratifying, but it is great to know that the work I am doing is appreciated.

“I am passionate about enabling people with failing sight to maintain their independence and feel privileged to have the skills and resources at my disposal to help those suffering with macular degeneration to do this.

“However, I do not do this alone. It is a team effort; community optometrists are assisted by a local charity and local hospital eye services to provide counselling and practical help for those who suffer sight loss, increasing their independence and quality of life.”

Hylda Fletcher, who nominated Kathryn for the award, said: “Mrs Heath goes out of her way to provide information, advice and aids to help.”

The judges will now decide on the overall winners and present them with their awards at the Society’s annual London conference on September 27.

The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss, providing free information and support to improve lives and funding research.
