BAKEWELL: Alan East appointed as choral society’s musical director



Following the sad and premature death of Richard Barnes, Bakewell Choral Society’s musical director, last July, the Choral Society have appointed as its new director, Alan East. He will be leading his first concert with the society on Saturday, March 16, when the choir will be giving a performance of Handel’s Messiah in Bakewell’s Parish Church commencing at 7.30pm.

Alan brings great experience as a choral conductor to the Society. At 15 he became one of the youngest ever associates of the Royal College of Music. He gained an MA degree in mathematics and music at Cambridge and a year later the Cert. Ed from the London University Institute of Education. He taught music at King Edward V11 School, Sheffield, and became Head of the Music Department. Since 1987 he has worked as a freelance musician both as teacher and as a performer.

He taught piano at Sheffield University from 1993–2006 and has been on the staff at the Sheffield Music School since 1987. Alan has been organist and choirmaster at several Sheffield churches and his current appointment is at St John’s, Abbeydale. He has been conductor of the Hallam Singers, Endcliffe Orchestra, Doncaster Choral Society and since 1986 Sheffield Oratorio Chorus, becoming the Musical Director in 2005.

Andrew Kirk will be joining the choir as organist, a role he has undertaken on many occasions.

The vocal soloists are all well established singers from the James Black Agency and the society are pleased to welcome Nicki Kennedy (soprano), Marie Elliott, James Edwards (tenor) and Njabulo Madlala (baritone), Stewart Morris and Trevor Hounsome will be joining the ensemble, playing in several items including the exciting bass aria, ‘The Trumpeter shall sound.’
