HIGH street bakery chain Greggs – which owns four stores in Chesterfield – has toasted a bumper leap in sales over Christmas and New Year.
Total sales rose by 10.8 per cent in the five weeks to January 7.
The company opened a record 98 new shops during the year.
However, the firm said it expected the economy to remain weak in 2012.
“We anticipate that the tough trading environment will continue during 2012, with consumers’ disposable incomes remaining under pressure,” said chief executive Ken McMeikan.
Meanwhile, Little Chef staff, at Whittington Moor, face an uncertain future after the company announced it will close 67 outlets and make between 500 and 600 job cuts.
Although the company has not released details of at-risk outlets, Graham Sims, chairman of Little Chef, said: “I know this will be tough and an uncertain time for many people in our team.”
